Video games and blockchain: Two industries joining forces for the love of gaming

In the past, we’ve written about how NFTs and blockchain technology have integrated themselves into the video gaming world, even becoming an essential aspect of many new games, such as Axie Infinity.

Well, ever since then, the connection between blockchain companies and gaming & esports developers has increased even more.

In one of the more prominent partnerships from the past few weeks, esports organisation Fnatic announced that it is creating a paid fan membership with blockchain network Polygon and in collaboration with Crypto.com. Fnatic wants fans to own their adoration for the franchise, and NFTs let “them have a say in where we go next,” according to the organisation’s website.

Other teams such as G2 Esports, Natus Vincere, and NRG Esports have all had their own NFT drops in the past. Organisations have seen this blockchain technology as a way to let fans own a piece of the franchise that they love. Whether it’s limited edition cards, tokens, or memorabilia, these NFT partnerships have expanded the door for fan engagement for teams.

But that’s just covering gaming companies getting into the NFT and cryptocurrency space. What about blockchain companies integrating their technology into new video games?

GOALS is an upcoming free-to-play football game that lets gamers own their star players and equipment. The video game is play-to-earn, which means that it rewards gamers for their time commitment and skill level with in-game assets that they own and can sell for real-life money.

There have been plenty of other play-to-earn games in the past that have also used blockchain technology to give gamers NFTs for their time playing, but GOALS just received 15 million USD in seed funding primarily from Northzone.

These two deals by Fnatic and GOALS have added more fuel to the fire of blockchain technology in the esports and gaming world. As we look back at the monumental rise of cryptocurrencies and NFTs, it’s easy to forget that so much has happened in so little time.

While we can surely be happy about the exciting present day, the future has a lot in store as video games and the blockchain companies partner more and more.
